THE SONG OF THE LAMB: SACRED MUSIC & THE HEAVENLY LITURGY
| Why is the liturgy at the center of what it means to be Catholic? What role does music play in the cosmic worship of God? And how can music be truly sacred and transcendent? Drawing on The Song of the Lamb by Cardinal Robert Sarah and Peter Carter, this three-week seminar explores the nature of liturgy, what makes music sacred, and how we are called to participate in the eternal worship of God in time and eternity. From the psalms sung in the Jewish Temple, to the chants sung in the early Church, and the vision of liturgical renewal articulated in the Second Vatican Council, we will examine why the People of God have always worshipped God in sung praise and how we are called to fully enter into the liturgy with heart and mind and voice. Whether you would describe yourself as musical or not, this seminar is for anyone interested in the Church’s teaching and tradition of sacred music and why understanding the role of sacred music is one of the best ways to prepare our hearts for heaven, the place that the Book of Revelation describes as being a continual song: the Song of the Lamb. |
