“People will have to go back to the land. The machine has displaced labor, the cities are overcrowded. The land will have to take care of them.” –Peter Maurin, Catholic theologian and social activist
Join us for a one-day Lenten Service Retreat to the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Farm, founded by Drs. Larry and Carmina Chapp. Inspired by the personalist philosophy of 20th-century Catholic social activists Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, the Chapps sought to more radically live out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy by starting the farm. Here they aim to “affect society in such a way that the dignity of the human person is paramount,” marrying the work of the land with the work of prayer to the benefit of the local community. One of their current projects is to create the Dorothy Day Food Pantry, partnering with their nearby pro-life pregnancy center to ensure the local in need have access to eggs, milk, and fresh produce as an alternative to the processed food offered at other local food pantries.
Beyond tending to the needs of their community and the land, the Chapps are committed to a life of spiritual and intellectual growth. They host what Peter Maurin called “roundtable discussions for the clarification of thought” – dialogues with local scholars about current social and theological topics of interest – with the aim of arriving at actionable ways of living.
Take part in all this – work, prayer, reflection, and application – on Saturday, March 29 with the Aquinas Institute! SIGN UP HERE.
